Two-Factor is a security plugin that enables passwordless authentication using Google Authenticator TOTP and Yubikey. It adds a new authentication factor (passwordless) to the WordPress login process, making it significantly more secure. Useful for preventing brute force attacks on your WordPress installation because you’ll have to have your device with you. Two-Factor even works great with existing services and internet of things applications because it works with FIDO U2F, SMS, and TOTP.

What’s a ‘Time Based One-Time Password'(TOTP)?

It’s a method you can use in place of your regular user name and password. With TOTP, you receive a ‘one-time password’ that changes every 30 seconds. It is valid for only those 30 seconds. After those 30 seconds, the OTP is useless, which means someone can’t capture it and use it at some later time. By adding an extra layer of security – time-based authentication – you’ll know for certain if someone is trying to steal your information or impersonate you.

A most effective method of securing online accounts

Protect your web app with two-factor authentication, the single most effective method of securing online accounts. Protect your login page with a randomly generated CAPTCHA, and allow users to gain entry after answering an additional security question, or provide a time window for users to enter their code or both. This plugin supports active sessions and storing tokens in the database for later retrieval. Also included is an HTTP API that can be used to verify tokens from inside applications.

Generates one-time passwords on a user’s mobile device

Two-Factor Authentication is a free WordPress plugin that allows for two-step authentication. It produces one-time passwords for a user’s mobile device or a verification code for internet sign-in. Two-Factor employs the same software strategy as Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Dropbox to defend itself from unwanted secret access: your mobile device becomes an extra password.
